Rental Solution Provides Water Treatment For Gas Station Upgrade

Temporary groundwater treatment equipment provides contaminant removal during underground storage tank replacement

Challenge

Evoqua's Carbonair was asked to provide a temporary groundwater treatment system to treat contaminated water that was generated by dewatering performed in support of an underground storage tank removal and upgrade at a gas station in north Florida.

In this case, the ground water at the remediation site was heavily contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons (gasoline and diesel) a form of VOC, which were present in dissolved and free product forms. The water also had high concentrations of arsenic and other heavy metals.

Due to the high water table, the excavation area had to be dewatered at a rate of 500 gpm to allow for the removal of the old UST tanks and installation of the new UST tanks. Carbonair designed and provided an on-site groundwater treatment system for a maximum flow rate of 500 gpm.

Solution

Evoqua's Carbonair field crew mobilized, set up, and trained the operators of the water treatment system. The groundwater treatment system performed as designed, meeting the required discharge limits and treating the contaminated water generated at the site at the required flow rate. The use of diesel pumps and Evoqua's Carbonair diesel driven air strippers avoided the need for a costly power drop or expensive generator rental. At the conclusion of the project, the field technicians provided demobilization services including the extraction and disposal of the spent carbon and ion exchange filter media, and demobilization of the equipment.
